FOSTER, Don (MP for Bath)


Don Foster was elected to Parliament in the April 1992 General Election. He defeated Chris Patten with a majority of 3,768. He also stood for Bristol East in 1987. Don was born in 1947 and was educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School, Keele University (BA Hons. in Physics and Psychology) and Bath University (MA in Education).

He was elected to Avon County Council in 1981, was Leader of the Liberal/Alliance Group until 1989 and Chairman of the Education Committee from 1987-1989.

Before entering Parliament, he was a science teacher, Director of the Science Project at the Resources for Learning Unit in Bristol, an education lecturer at Bristol University and then a management consultant with Pannell Kerr Forster. Don is the President of Liberal Democrat Youth and Students, Hon President of the British Youth Council, Vice Chair of the National Campaign for Nursery Education, Vice Chair of the British Association for Central and Eastern Europe, Treasurer of the All-Party Yugoslav Group, and a member of Amnesty International. He is a Trustee of both the Open School and Education Extra and a member of the Science and Technology All-Party Parliamentary groups.

Outside politics Don enjoys listening to Bob Dylan and classical music, watching films, modern ballet and all kinds of sport and reading almost anything. He is married with two children.
